Working from home can seem like the answer to all of your prayers. It can relieve transportation costs, daycare costs and it can even open up more doors for family time. Many even think that working from home can be stress free with no one holding you down, and no office/peer pressure. In fact, some believe that working from home is the solution to all of their problems!
All of these ideologies are correct if you have what it takes to work from home successfully. The hardcore truth of the matter is that working from home is all of those things for the right person with the right skill and the right attitude.
Just about anyone can “take up shop” in the comfort of their own home as long as they have space, skills and the right opportunity, setting these things up is the easy part.
The skills needed to work at home will depend on your career choice. If it is telecommunications, administrative, marketing etc., basically all you need is the desire to continually learn in your chosen field. Skills can be taught, skills can be learned.
Working from home does not take an elaborate office. However your home office does need to be comfortable, organized and functional. You will need the basic office equipment: desk, chair, computer, telephone, internet, fax, printer and stationary. When planning your office set up, keep in mind that having a quiet zone for your office should be the priority. Make your office setting a DO NOT ENTER sanctuary used just for work. Anyone can have the right set up for a home office with a little planning. The hard part however is attitude!
We all know we are capable of portraying a bad or good attitude. No one chooses our attitude for us, the choice is ours. When working from home, we need to pick the right attitude that we wear just as if we were picking our wardrobe for work. What is your attitude today?
According to the Webster’s Merriam Dictionary an attitude is: “A mental position with regard to a fact or state. Attitudes reflect a tendency to classify objects and events and to react to them with some consistency.” Attitudes are not directly observable but rather are inferred from the objective, evaluative responses a person makes.
It takes a special attitude and temperament to work from home successfully. Attitude comes in many forms, focused, driven, self disciplined, and diligent, or negative- just to name a few. Having the right attitude to work from home requires that you be focused and motivated to do the work without having someone look over your shoulder. Even though you are working from home, punctuality is a must. You must be organized and diligent to keep track of your daily schedule and be mentally prepared to put in a solid day’s work- everyday!
Working from home has many great benefits if you have the right skill, tools and the right attitude. However, before choosing to work from home, you must be honest when determining if you have the right attitude.
In the next article we will explain the most important part in having the right attitude – discipline. Self discipline is the first and foremost building block to achieve the right attitude. In order to maintain our positive attitude we must maintain self discipline.
